How business intelligence can boost your bottom line
According to Will Howard, Business Intelligence Search & Selection Specialist at Apex, the business intelligence industry is growing at a fast rate.
To put it simply, business intelligence (BI) makes sense of your data, interpreting facts and figures to help you make decisions in the future.
"Business intelligence is all about understanding your business," says Will.
"In order to be successful, all organisations need to understand what's happening in detail to really maximize profit. So although business intelligence technologies may seem expensive, it's a worthwhile investment long-term."
Will also shares some advice for companies looking to make this investment for the first time. He explains that the most successful business intelligence projects are those that are seen out from start to finish.
"The best advice I’d give to those companies is to stick to your goals, and don't change your plans if it takes a little while to get things going. It's not a straightforward, easy process to run a successful data warehouse and business intelligence project," Will said.
"The people that do see return on investment are the people who do stick to what they want to achieve and don't get sidetracked with all of the other technologies available. This can often blur what were clear objectives."
Will also recommends a strategy to help business intelligence workers engage fully with their company. The best BI experts are looking for positions in which they are valued and where they can contribute to the 'big picture' of the organisation. Insight garnered from BI projects can often throw up unexpected conclusions, and organisations need to be prepared to make changes if necessary.
And how should companies seek staff experienced in BI?
"As talented business intelligence people are in demand, it makes sense for companies to put in place a strategy which will ensure you are able to source hard to find candidates who are at the top of their game. That's why clients often come to us, they know that we are extremely well connected in the industry, and can quickly tap into our networks to find the ideal person."
