Resourcing teams: the engine room of our business
As a client-centric business, Michael Bailey Associates is constantly challenging our working practices and honing our processes to ensure maximum efficiency.
Of course, hiring in exceptional talent to our own business is a key part of this strategy. One area where we are always keen to expand is within our Resourcing teams.
Resourcers can be likened to the ‘engine room’ of our business; they work extremely hard to develop part of the ‘product’ that we provide to clients, namely our network of expert consultants.
But what makes a successful Resourcer? What experience, skills and attributes are necessary to develop a successful career with us?
We asked one of our senior Resourcers' for her thoughts:
Case study: Amsterdam IT Resourcer for 2.5 years:
This Resourcer joined Michael Bailey Associates after a period contracting in a variety of office roles, as well as a sideline career as a professional DJ. ‘It was great timing for me. DJing and contracting was fun, but I wanted something more secure and long-term. I love IT and wanted to work in an international organization.’
Within two years, the Resourcer had progressed from a trainee to one of the most senior members of the team, with the help of a structured training program and ongoing mentoring from her Manager.
Overcoming difficult challenges, taking ownership and responsibility and a supportive environment helped her win a number of internal accolades at the Annual Employee Awards, as well as a promotion at the end of her first 18 months service.
Her career took an exciting and dramatic turn in April 2014 when she was asked to work in Kuala Lumpur on a six month secondment to help establish Michael Bailey Associate’s new business venture. The move meant transferring from a large, established team within the IT sector to a start up operation specialising in Oil & Gas.
‘Personally, it was an amazing experience. I met some lovely people, developed new skills and experienced a totally different culture. I learnt so much, and was also able to transfer my knowledge of our systems and processes to the new team.’
What’s required to be successful in the role?
Our Resourcer explained that the role is interesting, varied and challenging.
‘Every day is different! It’s very fast paced and things can change rapidly, so you need to be prepared to adapt quickly. Mostly, it comes down to building strong relationships with consultants, and the ability to really listen to what people are saying.’
This last point may seem obvious, but it is a crucial part of understanding the market and the individual needs of the contracting consultant network. Alongside good listening skills goes the ability to communicate effectively and influence people.
Successful Resourcers have to be confident – they are working with senior people who are experts and are often influencial figures within their sphere of work. They also need to be extremely resilient, able to deal effectively with all situations, good and bad.
Market knowledge is also paramount. The most successful Resourcers have succeeded in establishing themselves as an expert within their niche area. Consultants will often turn to our Resourcers for advice, information about the marketplace, career opportunities and even personal advice.
As with any people orientated business, working hard and the ability to operate seamlessly within a team environment are also essential to the role. Keeping up to date with projects that the Account Management teams are working on, as well as other Resourcers within their own team and other offices across the Group network can provide vital insight that can benefit clients. As for working hard, both Resourcers agree on that point.
‘You really do get out of it what you put in. I am able to take ownership for my own area, and by doing so I am in control of my own earnings. There are plenty of opportunities to learn and develop your career here, and who knows, it may take you to places you had never even considered.’
